Do you have any rawhide chews?

A question I am asked regularly. The answer? No. I don’t sell anything I wouldn’t feed my own dogs and I absolutely will not feed my dogs rawhide. Rawhide is a popular dog chew that has been marketed as a dental aid and a healthy treat. However, recent studies have shown that rawhide can be harmful to dogs. Natural treats are a better alternative.

One of the main problems with rawhide is that it is difficult to digest. When a dog chews on a rawhide, it can become stuck in their throat or digestive tract. This can cause choking, blockages, or other serious health problems. In addition, rawhide can contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and arsenic, which are used in the manufacturing process. These chemicals can be toxic to dogs if ingested.

Another issue with rawhide is that it is often made from low-quality materials. Rawhide can come from any part of an animal, including the skin, hair, and bones. This means that it may contain harmful bacteria or other contaminants that can make dogs sick.

In addition, rawhide is often treated with chemicals to make it more appealing to dogs. In processing cattle hides, the hides are first soaked and treated with either an ash-lye solution or a highly toxic recipe of sodium sulfide and lime. This process helps to strip hair and fat. Hides are then washed and whitened using a solution of hydrogen peroxide. Next the hides are basted, smoked, and dyed. Some may be painted with a coating of titanium oxide to make them appear white and glossy. When tested: Lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium salts, formaldehyde, and other toxic chemicals have been detected in raw hides. These chemicals can be harmful if ingested, and may cause digestive problems or other health issues.

Natural treats, on the other hand, are made from high-quality ingredients that are safe for dogs to consume. These treats are often made from whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and meat. They do not contain any harmful chemicals or preservatives, and are free from contaminants such as bacteria or mould.

Another benefit of natural treats is that they are more nutritious than rawhide. Many natural treats contain vitamins and minerals that are essential for a dog's health. For example, treats made from fruits and vegetables can provide dogs with important nutrients such as fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C. Meat-based treats can provide dogs with protein, which is important for building and maintaining strong muscles.

In addition, natural treats can be a great way to improve a dog's dental health. Many natural treats are designed to help clean a dog's teeth and gums, which can help prevent tooth decay and other dental problems. Some natural treats are also formulated to freshen a dog's breath, which can be a great way to keep a dog's mouth healthy and smelling fresh.

Overall, it is clear that rawhide is not a safe or healthy option for dogs. While it may seem like a tasty treat, it can cause serious health problems and may contain harmful chemicals or contaminants. Natural treats, on the other hand, are a safe and nutritious option that can provide dogs with important nutrients and improve their overall health. If you are looking for a treat for your dog, consider choosing a natural option instead of rawhide, for example our new pork rind rolls.
